CHAPTER 18

I had a full week ahead of me. With less than three weeks before Skylar’s wedding, I was busy making sure every little detail was accounted for. I had promised Skylar a fabulous wedding ceremony and I always deliver on the fabulous. I also had scheduled business meetings. I had instructed my secretary to cancel all but two of my meetings. In fact, I had closed my calendar for the next month. I figured after Skylar’s wedding, I would need a vacation before I start all over again with Stephanie’s big day. Having back-to-back nuptials was exhausting, but well worth the final outcome.

I had invited Donald Baldwin to my office for a meeting. I called him after our Sunday brunch and told him that I might be able to assist with his funding issue. I instructed him to bring with him his financial reports from the last two years and the interim report for this year. I knew I didn’t need to look them over, but I wanted him to think that my proposal was business motivated and not personal. I had already looked into his business records. I knew everything I needed to know about Baldwin Enterprises. I knew that Donald had spent company money putting Terrance through medical school, and that was the main cause of the business being in the red. Every bit of profit went to paying for college. Which told me they had poor planning and financial advice. I could use that knowledge to my advantage.

My other meeting was with Ryan Wagner. His company wanted to do business with me. From what I gathered; Ryan has been trying to get a meeting with us for the past two years. I don’t know how he got past the gatekeepers now, but since he did, I was more than willing to hear his proposal. Now that we were practically family, it wouldn’t hurt to join forces. It always paid to keep our enemies close, even when they start off as family first. I hadn’t figured out how this would work to my advantage, but if it was like any other meeting, I would soon find out. Besides, my research on Jill and Ryan came back clean. It appears that they are the American dream, but I knew better. The cleanest façade always has the messiest interiors.

First up was Ryan. I thought about inviting Brandon to the meeting, but I needed him to focus on Stephanie and my future grandchild. I would just be a distraction for him, even though this was a business meeting. I decided to take the meeting alone. I saw Ryan arrive through my office window. Ryan was punctual. His tailored black suit fit his athletic build. His clean-shaven face resembled Brad, just slightly older. My secretary buzzed me that he was here. As standard practice I would take a few minutes before going out and greeting my guest. I waited and then went to greet Ryan. I escorted him back to my office and offered him a seat.
